Built to Last: The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning & Maintaining Your Rolling Knife Sharpener

You’ve invested in a high-quality tool designed to last a lifetime. Like any piece of precision equipment - from a good watch to a great chef’s knife - a little care and maintenance will ensure your Oakstone sharpener performs flawlessly for decades to come.

Proper care isn't a chore; it’s a simple, satisfying ritual that protects your investment and ensures your sharpener is always ready for action. This guide will walk you through the easy steps to keep your rolling sharpener in pristine condition.

After Every Use: The 30-Second Wipe-Down

The most important habit is the simplest one.

  • Wipe Your Knife: After sharpening, always wipe your knife blade clean with a cloth to remove any microscopic metal filings (known as a "burr") before you start slicing.

  • Wipe Your Sharpener: Give the roller and the solid oak base a quick wipe with a dry, clean cloth. This prevents metal dust from building up and keeps your tool looking its best.

Deep Cleaning Your Abrasive Discs (When Needed)

Over time, you might notice metal filings accumulating on the abrasive discs, which can slightly reduce their effectiveness. Here’s how to easily restore them.

  • For the Diamond Disc: Metal dust can sometimes clog the fine diamond surface. To clean it, gently scrub the disc with a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) or a damp melamine sponge (magic eraser). This will lift the particles and restore the disc’s original gritty texture.

  • For the Ceramic Disc: The white ceramic disc will show grey marks from the steel it removes. This is normal. It can be cleaned in exactly the same way as the diamond disc to return it to its original state.

Caring for the Solid Oak Body

We chose solid oak for its beauty and durability. To care for it, simply wipe it down with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never submerge the wooden components in water or put them in the dishwasher.

About once a year, or whenever the wood looks a little dry, you can nourish it by applying a small amount of food-safe mineral oil or board butter with a soft cloth. This will enrich the colour and grain of the oak, keeping it beautiful for a lifetime, just like a quality chopping board.

Long-Term Storage

Your Oakstone sharpener comes in a premium box that is designed to be its permanent storage case. Keeping it in the box protects it from dust, moisture, and workshop clutter, ensuring it’s in perfect condition every time you need it.

Do diamond knife sharpeners wear out?

For a home cook, a high-quality diamond disc will last for thousands of sharpenings - many, many years of use. While any abrasive will eventually wear with extreme use, our discs are also designed to be replaceable, staying true to our 'buy it for life' philosophy.

Is it safe to get the magnets wet?

While a wipe with a damp cloth is fine, you should avoid soaking the magnetic base. Our magnets are housed securely within the solid oak, but keeping the tool dry is the best practice for any product combining wood and metal.

Can I put my rolling sharpener in the dishwasher?

No. Dishwashers use high heat and harsh detergents that will damage the solid oak and can degrade the components over time. A simple wipe-down is all that’s needed.

What kind of oil is safe to use on the oak handle?

Any food-safe mineral oil or cutting board conditioner is perfect. These are readily available at kitchenware or hardware stores. Only a very small amount is needed once or twice a year.
