Search for a premium rolling knife sharpener in Australia and HORL comes up first. German engineering, clean design, a reputation earned over years. It is a good tool and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
We built Oakstone anyway. Here is the honest version of why, and where the two actually differ.
What HORL does well
Made in Germany, which for a lot of people is reason enough, and fairly so. Quality timber, effective diamond and ceramic abrasives, and a product that performs. If budget is not a factor, it is a fine choice.
What we built
Solid oak and stainless steel. No plastic parts, no veneers.
Triple-layered N50 magnets, because grip is where cheaper rolling sharpeners fall down. If the blade shifts mid-pass, the angle you carefully selected stops meaning anything.
A 400 grit diamond disc and a 1000 grit ceramic disc, so sharpening and honing are both covered without buying anything extra.
Where they genuinely differ
Materials. Both use good timber. HORL is often walnut, ours is oak. That one is down to taste.
Performance. For a home cook, both produce an excellent edge. Anyone telling you they can feel a meaningful difference in the finished edge between two well-made dual-angle systems is selling something.
Price. This is the real difference. HORL sits well above us. You are paying for an imported German brand, which is a legitimate thing to want.
So which one
If owning the German original matters to you, buy the HORL. You will be happy with it.
If you want the same category of tool, made from the same class of materials, for meaningfully less, that is what we do.

Is Oakstone a copy of HORL?
Rolling sharpeners are a category, not a patent, in the same way that chef's knives are. We designed ours around solid oak, N50 magnets and a dual-angle base for the Australian market. We were obviously not first to the concept and we have never claimed to be.
